An ancient chicken coop recovered and transformed
in our design laboratory enhancing a rural building in the
respect for the “genius loci"…
Even in the design and artisanal production of our objects, we use natural materials, enhancing them. Just like in architecture, our creations have their own materiality, a soul, a history, and the characteristic of being unique, just like nature itself.
The concept of recovery and reuse was also adopted for the old furnishings and objects of rural life that we restored by "readapting" them for new uses .
Among the recovered and restored objects: the chicken ladder has become a support surface, supported by two recovered sawhorses, as has the board on which some wooden crates rest, including one used by the chickens for brooding;
A carpenter's table for the interior and an iron table for the exterior; two wooden planks and some salvaged and assembled iron bars became a shelving unit; old yokes were reused to create the lighting system above the alcoves and the chicken ladder; the old iron mesh from the two windows were used to create the lampshades for the lamps placed above the carpenter's table; old wooden planks were assembled to create the two shutters.
The work inside and outside the former chicken coop was designed to enhance the existing structure while respecting tradition and its historical value.
The concept of our restoration was to preserve the existing structure by eliminating the additions that had accumulated over time and instead highlighting the missing parts, which were restored. For example, the walls of the alcoves and the adjacent ones were stripped, exposing a particular previous finish that we decided to maintain , enhancing and protecting it. The wooden beams were sanded, then treated with a woodworm inhibitor and painted with a water-based wood stain to highlight the wood grain.
The former chicken coop in its original state before the renovation work to convert it into our design laboratory...
Before the renovations, the former chicken coop had been abandoned for some time and used as a woodshed. Windows and shutters were missing, the wooden front door was partially damaged and worm-eaten, some of the exterior plaster was bulging and flaking, some of the mortar between the bricks was missing in some bare areas, some of the walls had poorly applied concrete patches, and along the entire perimeter wall, up to the alcoves, there was a layer of damaged pre-existing paint.
